The Firm

My client is one of the leading providers of advice, investments and wealth management both in the UK and internationally with responsibility for significant funds under management including substantial assets managed on behalf of many charities. The company has managed bespoke investment portfolios for individuals and families for generations and has gained a unique understanding of the specific needs of their clients.

The Charity business is a core business channel for the company and one to which it is highly committed at a senior level. Having grown to one of the largest UK Charity investment firms, the company continues to harness this position and focus upon the further growth and development of the business. As such, a Senior Investment Director is now sought to help drive further growth of the Charity business.

The Role

The Charities team specifically looks after charity and not for profit clients across the UK and the opportunity exists to join the team as it enters an exciting growth phase. The team are looking to add an experienced investment manager to manage an existing book of business and they will be empowered to develop new client business through working with a dedicated Business Developer.

They will work collegiately alongside senior investment directors and as part of the central charity team, with a large direct client base and Charity Authorised Investment Fund (CAIF). The role focuses exclusively on charities and institutions and will include taking on and managing existing relationships, whilst also being active in winning new accounts.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of investment managers who are all dedicated to running charity money with many years of experience in the sector. The team have a passion for sustainable investment and focus on working with charities to help them invest responsibly in a way that is aligned with their investment goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Attract, develop, and retain a portfolio of charity relationships to maximize asset and revenue growth by meeting client’s needs, including managing client assets on a discretionary or advisory basis as well as introducing other products and services according to the overall strategy of the firm.
• Contribute to and demonstrate a sound working knowledge of ethical, faith based and responsible investment.
• Involvement with the management of the company’s CAIF for charities.
• Actively seek new business, whilst seeking competitive pitches, being active in local social/business circles, generating and following up all leads, explaining the firms’ services and strengths to potential new clients and following up all opportunities to win new clients.
• To assess existing and potential clients’ circumstances, investment objectives and attitude to risk, and recommend appropriate professional services as relevant.
• To ensure that any investment advice and decisions to trade are suitable for the client, taking into consideration their individual circumstances.
• To ensure that all client relationships are properly documented, and all required information is obtained from the client on a timely basis, ensuring where relevant that “know your client” information is maintained up-to-date and properly documented.
• To provide investment advice appropriate to the client’s needs, and in compliance with all relevant rules, regulations and in-house policies and procedures.
• To have a clear understanding of the client’s investment objectives, risk profile, investment experience and financial resource and be clear about the suitability of the recommendations to advisory clients and of the transactions effected for clients under a discretionary mandate.
• To attend and participate in relevant company meetings as required in the various other aspects of the investment selection process.
• To provide clients and/or their agents with such information and reports about their investment transactions, income payments and investment performance as requested and/or specified in the terms and conditions of the relevant service.
• Contribute to thought leadership in the charitable sector, including participation at conferences, seminars, and round table events.
• To assist in the training and development of trainee investment managers, providing support and guidance where relevant. Maximize their potential, working with management and other investment team staff to strengthen the work of the department promoting the firm’s TCF culture.
• To liaise as required with the Marketing and Business Development functions in initiating and developing new business opportunities.

Qualifications & Experience

• Demonstrable experience of managing investment portfolios for charities.
• Driven individual who has a genuine interest in the charity sector and can work as part of a team to grow the Charities business.
• Experience of ethical, faith based and responsible investment mandates.
• A passion for ESG and responsible investment.
• Solid working knowledge of ongoing developments within responsible investment. Ideally possess existing or prior trustee experience or pro-bono investment advisor roles outside of current employment.
• Experience of managing investments within a unitized structure beneficial
• Desire to deliver a genuinely bespoke service to clients and centre the service around the specific needs of each charity.
• Ability to adapt and recognise that success depends on flexibility, innovation and enthusiasm to successfully meet the needs of the client in a constantly evolving environment, particularly when it comes to ESG related issues.
• Desire to win new business on behalf of the team.
• Have the tenacity and confidence to challenge the status quo within the team.
• Attention to detail and strong communication skills both verbal and oral.
• Ability to cooperate and collaborate unselfishly in pursuit of team and Group performance.

The company is determined to appoint a high calibre candidate and is offering a negotiable basic salary and a remuneration package which will include a range of benefits and discretionary bonus.
